New Old Mixte

December 20, 2009

Melissa's new old Mixte

My better half recently informed me that I am the proud owner of a late 70s Motobecane mixte. The bike was a Chicago Craigslist find in decent original condition but will be tweaked to perfection and eventually become my all-weather commuter bike. The to-do list includes greasing and repacking bearings, installing new brake tables, derailleur cables, handlebars, saddle, fenders, lights, and flat-resistant tires. Roughly half of the needed parts will be purchased second-hand from Craigslist or Ebay and those being removed from the bike will be resold or repurposed for a future bike project. File the attached photos under “before” and stick around to see the final product.

As the resident scavenger/packrat/vulture, stay tuned for future posts as I scour sites and sidewalks for free (and cheap) used goodies ripe for repurposing. Because seriously, why buy new when you can recycle?

Another wise method for recycling is to use interchangeable parts. They are made to specifications that ensure that they are so nearly identical that they will fit into any other device of the same type.
