Down the drain

January 3, 2010

Just like my drain.

I was extremely excited this morning to notice that the water was draining really slowly in the bathroom sink.  I realise that for most people this is not a cause for celebration, but now that I have discovered this awesome way to unclog the drain I’m simply delighted.  (Before I figured this out I spent an inglorious afternoon taking apart the p-trap and putting it all back together rather badly just so I could avoid the use of disgusting draino).

Remove any caps/plugs etc to allow easiest flow of water and if there is any standing water in the sink bail it out or wait for it to drain out

  • Pour a cup of baking soda into the drain
  • Follow with a cup of warm vinegar.
  • Wait for volcano action.
  • Leave for 15 minutes
  • Pour boiling water down drain and following with warm water until running clear.
  • (You might need to repeat a second time — I did)

Its really fun, totally non toxic and works like a charm!

To maintain clog free drains, simply use the baking soda and vinegar trick once a month as a matter of routine.  You’ll never need draino again!

I will definitely try out this in my bathtub that gets clogged right after I take shower. I know that vinegar is also a potent cleaning agent. It can be used to clean grease on the surface of the kitchen cabinets.
