Robert Henry Vintage
Today’s post is peripherally about lavender lemonade again: I know most of you already have the recipe for the delicious herb cordial – hells, most of you have probably preserved your own batch and filled your pantry with this special syrup so that you can enjoy delicious cocktails all summer long. If that is the case you are missing only one thing, and it is that one thing which I saved to share with you today.
A little while ago I happened to walk down 6th avenue in Park Slope on my way to dinner, I was a little late and walking quickly, but when I passed the window of Robert Henry Vintage I stopped in my tracks and stood for a while in tormented indecision… should I go in and gaze on the wonders, find the glasses that I knew were my soul mates and take them home with me, or should I arrive for dinner while there was still dinner to arrive for? I decided on the latter because I wanted to go back to Robert Henry when there was nothing and no-one to distract me from this purpose. And go back I did. Just two weeks later.
The store is my dream vintage shopping experience. There is no muddle of bric-a-brac to sort through, no dusty old corners, no forgotten flasks. The carefully curated selection of tableware and furniture could be given a show at the Cooper Hewitt. I need this. In stores full of old hidden treasures I lose my way, and my patience, and come out empty-handed. I know some of you love that treasure hunt, but not I. I want to come in and see all the jewels arrayed before me so I just have to find the perfect one for me. If you are like me, make your way to this store as soon as you can: you never know what they will have and you don’t want to miss the perfect pitcher! And if you don’t live around here, you can see many of their current wares on the website. The set I took home were the lilac version of the Blenko design from the West Virginia Glass Company, made from the 50’s to the 70’s. Aren’t they gorgeous? I can’t tell you how much fun it was to fill them up with vodka lemonade and toast to the summer of 2010!

Wow, that set is seriously gorgeous. I love the symbiotic relationship between the servingware and the lavender lemonade!!
Thanks Beth – although the weird thing is the the lavendar lemondade is actually a kind of orange color on its own… but it sounds like it matches w/ the servingware!
It looks to me like the pitcher and glasses have a lavender tint, because the handle of the pitcher is purple. I’m guessing that the lemonade is not purple.
Wow, I always see lavender in the farmer’s markets around here, but never know what to do with them. Love this color of this lemonade. Looks (almost) too pretty to drink…almost!
I always thought of lavender as just being for putting in your underwear drawer (which I don’t want to do)! But its actually tasty too!
I love rummaging around in stores like that. They’re so dangerous, though. You always end up coveting so many things that you never knew you needed, but now just can’t live without. 😉
Dangerous is right! I’m glad this store is not so close to my house at least this way I have to make a special trip out there before I can indulge!
This sums up my thrifting ideas – I used to be a more avid thrifter before the boy-o came along, and now I feel like whenever I go, I try too hard to find the perfect deal/price and come out empty handed. This set is perfect, and the beautiful photo does make you look twice to see if the contents or the glassware is giving you that color! Lucky you to have this shop nearby!
I dont’ think boy-os are very good for taking thrifting: when my little brother was younger you could barely take him into a regular store w/out him causing havoc, and in a china store he’d have been worse than a bull!
I have a think for vintage barware and glassware. I’ve never seen a set lik this and I’m totally jealous! It really is Fabulous!

Wow, you summed me up perfectly! I never shop at Ross or TJ Maxx for just that reason. I need to have everything neatly displayed so I can visualize. I don’t have the patience to dig for the hidden treasures. Sounds like an awesome store!

Oh wow! I have this pitcher set in green. My mom was redoing her kitchen and was going to toss it out. I thought it was ugly as a kid, but I love it now. I had no idea they came in other colors. The purple version is gorgeous. Congrats on your lucky find.
You are so lucky to have gotten that from your mom. It always amazes me the things that get tossed out! I guess tastes change, even, as you point out, our own tastes over time.

The photo of the lavender lemonade is absolutely beautiful! The color is incredible! I bet it’d make me wanna take a long nap in a hammock!
Those glasses do show off the drink very well. I think I have similar glasses, but they’re solid green (I see an earlier comment to that effect) and my mom had a pitcher similar to that style, but I think it was shorter… now I’m intrigued and will have to raid my mom’s dishes!
I’ve made lavender lemonade by brewing the lavender flowers as a tea and then adding the tea to the lemonade.
Beautiful glasses. I’m from WV and we enjoy all the glass made here. One small correction–the company’s name is Blenko Glass. Their water pitchers are also wonderful.
Does the lavender lemonade actually come out that beautiful purple color, or do you add some type of coloring?!
Neither actually: the lemonade is a orangey/yellow color – its the gorgeous glassware that is mauve!!
I love the lavender blendo! I have a large collection of it! My parents started my collection a few years back…they saw it and knew I liked purple. There are serving bowls and salad bowls and many styles of pitchers and glasses and one of my favorite pieces is the set of oil and vinegar. I love using my pitchers and glasses to serve spring and summer drinks!
I’m jealous of your whole collection, I’d love an oil and vinegar set: will have to keep an eye out for those…!!

I really enjoyed this post, but I need to make an additional correction for you and Debbeeanne. I, too, am from WV. The pitcher and glasses shown are Blendo glassware. There are several glass ware companies in WV, one of them being Blenko which is still in business and Blendo which made your pitcher and glasses in the 50’s and 60’s.
