Graveyards give back

May 28, 2010

How cool is stainless steel.. an architect will say, “very cool!” How cool are recycled aluminum aircraft tiles.. “cooler than cool!” Available from Coverings Etc., the Bio-Luminum tiles are 100% recycled aluminum tiles from retired aircrafts, which reside in airplane graveyards.  The alloys used to make aluminum stronger for the planes make the aluminum non recyclable unlike aluminum cans.  Bio-Luminum is not only 100% post consumer recycled but is also recyclable through a buy-back program that Coverings Etc. has initiated.  This way if a consumer no longer needs the tiles they can sell them back at raw material cost.

These tiles are 1/8″ thick and come in 6″ x 12″, 3″ x 6″ or 3″ x 12″ sizes in an industrial finish.  They can be mounted vertically or horizontally, with or without grout lines. They are bonded using silicon adhesive and will age and change patina. Sealing them will prevent this. The strength of aircraft aluminum makes this durable tile suitable for high traffic flooring as well as high end wall treatment.

These are so cool…even my boyfriend got excited about them, and he’s definitely not prone to excitement over tiles.

Do you have any idea how much they cost? I couldn’t find it on the website (which makes me think they must be expensive.)
